Anne broke Victor's heart when he was poor to spare him from her family's terminal illness. Years later, now New York's feared Don, Victor forces her into marriage and punishes her with endless affairs. He never realizes Anne is dying until it's too late. By the time the truth comes out, she is gone, and Victor's love curdles into guilt, obsession, and madness.
